One day while Asclepiades was going to his villa he met a funeral procession composed of a great number of persons. Tired from carrying the corpse, they had set it down beside the road to rest. The Greek physician looked closely at the corpse and thought that he saw traces of life lie extinguished the fire which had already been lit and persuaded the relatives and friends to wait. The corpse was carried into a neighbouring house, and after several minutes of manipulations all those who were present were astonished to see dead move and gradually come back to life. The news of this miraculous cure spread through Rome with rapidity of lightning.
