Claudius Galen was born in 138 A.D. at Pergamon in Asia Minor, where there was a famous temple of Aesculapius.
When he was young he studied first philosophy and then medicine. His teachers of anatomy were outstanding anatomists. He devoted himself to practice and examined, his patients with the greatest care. Galen left his fatherland to acquire further knowledge. He went to Smyrna and then to Alexandria, where he studied anatomy. He is known to be an indefatigable student of the rules of the art of medicine in the works of Hippocrates.
