Memorial Day, May 30, is a national holiday. Schools, offices and banks close for the day. On that day, Americans honor the servicemen who gave their lives in past wars. Schools, clubs and churches decorate the cemeteries. They put up flags on the graves of army, navy and airmen. They hold memorial services in churches, halls, parks and cemeteries. They hang American flags on the main streets of the towns.
On that day, you may hear many patriotic songs, especially songs of the Civil War. You may also hear a famous speech of that war, the Gettysburg Address. The speech is only ten sentences long. But the last sentence of it, “the government of the people, by the people, for the people”, is known to all Americans.

One the best way to celebrate Mother’s Day is to give your mom the day off. Let her take it easy and relax while the rest of the family does the work.
Many families begin Mother’s Day with breakfast in bed. Usually Dad and the kids will let mom sleep late as they go into the kitchen and prepare her favourite meal. A Mother’s Day breakfast can consist of anything your mom likes.
After the food is cooked arrange everything nicely on a tray. Don’t forget a vase with a single flower. When everything is ready, carefully carry her tray to her bedroom. Cards and small presents from the children can be placed on the tray before it is presented to mom in bed.

In 1605 King James I was on the throne. As a Protestant, he was very unpopular with Roman Catholic. Some of them planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament on 5th November of that year, when the King was going to open Parliament. Under the House of Lords they stored thirty-six barrels of gunpowder, which were to be exploded by a man called Guy Fawkes. However, one of the plotters spoke about these plans and Guy Fawkes was discovered, arrested, later hanged. Since that day the English traditionally celebrate 5th November by burning a dummy, made of straw and old clothes, on a bonfire, at the same time letting of fireworks. This dummy is called a “guy” (like Guy Fawkes) and children can often be seen on the pavements before 5th November saying, “Penny for guy”. If they collect enough money, they can buy some fireworks.

It was believed that the first person to visit one’s house on New Year’s Day could bring good or bad luck. Therefore, people tried to arrange for the person of their own choice to be standing outside their houses ready to be let in the moment midnight had come. Usually a dark-complexioned man was chosen, and never a woman, for she would bring bad luck. The first footer was required to carry three articles: a piece of coal to wish warmth, a piece of bread to wish food, and a silver coin to wish wealth. In parts of northern England this pleasing custom is still observed.
