Those who engage in sport may be professionals (that is, paid players) or amateurs. Professionals keep up the technical standards of the sports in which they take part and spectators make a vital contribution by their enthusiasm and their financial support; but the sporting life of Britain derives its character principally from the amateur element - people who devote time and energy to organising sport and to teaching and training, as well as the many thousands of all ages who engage in sport for pleasure alone.
