The popular notion of the development of the steam engine includes the story of how James Watt was in his mother’s kitchen, the kettle boiled, steam came out, and Watt realized the tremendous power of steam and later invented the steam engine. The story has nothing to do with reality, and Watt had nothing to do with kettles. The true origin of the steam engine is very different and much more interesting.
