All English universities except Oxford and Cambridge are fairly new. The University of Oxford was the first university in Britain. It was organised in the 12th century as a federation of colleges. They are governed by their own teaching staff known as “Fellows”. The oldest college, University College, was founded in 1249. Other famous colleges are: All Souls (founded in 1438), Christ Church (founded in 1546) and the first women’s college Lady Margaret Hall (founded in 1878).
