1. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in the North America. This freshwater lake is embraced by mountains. Lake Tahoe fills a basin that formed 2 million years ago. It is fantastically bright blue. Everywhere around the lake you can see wonderful mountains and forests to explore.
2. Lake Baikal is the world’s oldest, largest and deepest freshwater lake, surrounded by mountains covered with multi-coloured taiga. Its vast blue water breathes freely, its waves rise slowly and then wash softly against the stony shore. But behind its leisurely rhythm there lies enormous strength.
3. The main lakes located in Canada (many large lakes are traversed by the Canada-US border) are Huron, Great Bear, Superior, Great Slave, Winnipeg, Erie and Ontario. Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories is the largest lake situated entirely in Canada; its area is more than 31,000 square kilometres.
4. The Highlands of Scotland are among the oldest mountains in the world. They reach their highest point in Ben Nevis (1343 m). Many valleys between the hills are filled with lakes, called lochs. The best-known is Loch Ness where some people think a large monster lives.

HOLIDAYS IN THE USA
1. Labour Day is traditionally celebrated on the first Monday of September. The first Labour Day parade was held in New York in 1882. The US Congress declared it a national holiday in 1894. Americans are very proud of their tradition of hard work to increase their economic status.
2. To people all over the world, Christmas is a season of giving and receiving presents. Father Christmas comes into houses in the night and leaves gifts for the children. Americans gave Father Christmas, or Santa Claus, as they call him, a white beard, dressed him in a red suit and made him a cheery old gentleman with red cheeks and a twinkle in his eye.
3. Easter celebrates the Christian belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Many Americans follow old traditions of colouring hard-boiled eggs and giving children baskets of candy. On the next day the President of the US holds an annual Easter egg hunt on the White House lawn for young children.
4. National flags are not only symbols of a country. They convey past history and future goals. The current American flag called “Stars and Stripes” has 13 red and white alternating stripes (representing the original 13 states-colonies) and 50 stars (each star represents a state) on a blue background. Flag Day is celebrated on June 14.

The roles men play in the Bijago Islands are similar to those in the European countries.
CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS
1. In the Bijago Islands the roles that men and women play are different. Men look after the children and wear jewellery and perfume when they go out. They spend hours in front of a mirror brushing their hair and choosing clothes to wear. Women find building houses preferable to shopping and do all kinds of jobs men normally do in other countries.
2. In ancient Egypt people had their palms (ладони) and soles (подошвы) of their feet stained with a red vegetable paint. They also decorated their faces with blue paint. Women had their skin lightened with a reddish-yellow colouring; men had theirs darkened with orange paint. Both men and women used to line their eyes heavily with black powder.
3. Some fashions develop from religious beliefs. Rastafarians have their long hair twisted into thick strands (пряди). These are called dreadlocks. The lion is an important symbol in their religion and the dreadlocks symbolise a lion’s mane (грива). Many other people, black and white, have adopted this hairstyle simply because they find it attractive.
4. High heels (каблуки) and platform shoes are not new. Hundreds of years ago, people used to wear them in the street because the streets were full of rubbish (мусор). The rubbish didn’t touch their feet so their feet and dress didn’t get dirty. However they were uncomfortable and even dangerous to wear because of the terrible conditions of the roads.

1. One may think that human beings have the biggest brains on Earth in ratio to body size. But ichthyologists believe this is untrue. A group of fish called elephant nose fish has relative brain sizes that rival or exceed the human’s one. The fish use weak electrical currents to communicate and navigate in murky waters. Such an extensive brain may be needed to generate and interpret the signals.
2. Most people don't think the Moon is made of cheese, but sometimes it certainly looks like a wheel of cheese that's blue with mold. It looks full of holes, like Swiss cheese, and it some times has a greenish or bluish colour, like Gorgonzola cheese. The holes are actually craters caused by asteroids, which are big rocks that fly through space. The greenish or bluish colour is caused by the Earth's shadow across the Moon's surface.
3. The Monarch butterfly is a remarkable insect. It is a very powerful flyer. Some of them travel over 1000 miles during their short life. Before their migration to the South begins, they spend all their time eating nectar to get energy for their long-distance flight. The Monarch butterflies spend winter in the South and make their way back to the North individually, not in groups.
4. Every growth season a tree adds a new layer of wood to its trunk. Each ring has two parts – a wide light part and a narrow dark one. Tree rings give the clue about the climate. The shape and width of annual rings can differ from year to year. Wide rings mean good condition for growth. Narrow rings often mean less favourable condition.

1. Stonehenge is a mysterious circle of giant stones in southern England. It was built probably between 3000 and 2000 BC. Some of the stones weigh over 25 tons! The giant rocks were obviously arranged with some purpose in mind, but what was it? Most historians agree that it was built as a temple, but it was also probably used as an early astronomical tool!
2. Can the trains go under the sea? Now they can! The Channel Tunnel is 31 miles long, and 23 of those are underneath the English Channel! It takes only 20 minutes to travel from England to France. They made a huge 90 acre park with all the dirt they dug up to build it. It took nearly 13,000 engineers, technicians, and workers to build it!
3. The Bermuda is an imaginary triangle in the Atlantic Ocean. Planes and ships have disappeared in the area. Some people blame the disappearances on supernatural forces. Though there are natural explanations. The scientists say that this is a place where a magnetic compass points towards true north, instead of magnetic north, so planes or ships could get off course if they don't make adjustments.
4. The highest waterfall in the world is Angel Falls in the rain forests of Venezuela. It's about 20 times taller than Niagara Falls – the water drops a distance of 3,212 feet! Because it's surrounded by thick forests, Angel Falls wasn't discovered until the early 1930s. The waterfall was named after American explorer James Angel, who crash-landed his plane near it soon after its discovery.
