The ML9927 semiconductor laser works in the 1.55 µm band, produces a single wavelength and transmits to points 100 km away. The laser will work in advanced optical communication networks that transmit data at 2.5 Gbps. In constructing the device, the engineers applied a multiple layer quantum well (MQW) structure to the active layer of the lightemitting section, using an optimum number of quantum wells. By limiting the wavelength modulation to 0.3 nm during signal modulation at 2.5 Gbps the ML9927 achieves long-distance transmission up to 100 km. Previously, the longest possible distance was 30 km at a 1nm wavelength modulation. Tests of the product show a service life at 50˚C of 100,000 hours (about 12 years).
