The first commercial television broadcast was made on April 20, 1939 by Radio Corporation of America (RCA). Since 1939, it has become one of the most important facts of modern life. Television is very much a part of the modern world. Its effects are felt all over the world.
Television is a reflection of the modern world, say some people. It shows contemporary society. It affects customs and culture, others say. Television is bad for culture because it keeps culture from growing, say still others.
Good or bad, television is difficult to avoid.

London, the capital of the United Kingdom, was founded in AD 43 by the Roman invaders as a settlement and a fortress. At first it had the name of Londinium. Due to its convenient position in the mouth of the river Thames the settlement grew and developed into a city. In the 11th century London became the capital of England. For centuries it was a prominent port through which wealth and prosperity came to the country.
Historically and geographically London can be divided into three parts: the City, the West End and the East End. The City is the financial centre of the country, with offices of large firms and banks and the Stock Exchange.
The West End has always been considered a place where aristocrats lived. There is a great number of sights and attractions: the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Nelson Column, to mention just a few of them. London’s beautiful parks are also there: Hyde Park, St. James’ Park, Regent’s Park are favourite places for Londoners to visit and relax. One may also go shopping in the West End – Piccadilly Street and Oxford Street both present a wide choice of expensive shops and boutiques.
The East End was previously considered the place where not well-to-do people lived. The East End is now considered a bohemian district. The ugly docks, which for years disguised the face of the East End, are now closed, and new hotels, stadiums and apartment houses are being built.

In addition to carbohydrates, fats, proteins, mineral salts and water, it is essential that the food of man and animals contains small amounts of the substances called vitamins, which the living organism is unable to manufacture by itself and which have to be supplied from other sources, namely diet. If anyone of same fifteen of more of these compounds is lacking in the diet, there occurs eventually a breakdown of metabolic processes that results in symptoms of malnutrition that are classed, at the deficiency diseases.

Early Russian Architecture
1. Russian borrowed its early architecture, like its icon painting, from Byzantium. From the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries early towns were built on defensive sites on high river banks. From afar were visible low white walls with towers, churches with brilliant domes and bell towers. The finest examples of traditional architecture can be seen in the towns of Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Suzdal, Bogolyubovo and Sergiev Posad.
2. In Russia, timber has always been the most natural building material. Russian carpenters decorate the diverse structures they were building with beautiful carved decorations above windows and porches. One can see such decorations on log-cabins, fortress towers, huge cathedrals, churches and monasteries.
3. Wooden and masonry architecture developed side by side in medieval Russia, one stimulating and gratifying the love for verticality and slenderness, the other satisfying a yearning for massiveness, monumentality, and lavish decoration in the expression of power and splendour. The few remaining examples of the ancient wooden structures are now in Rostov and also in the museums of wooden buildings in Novgorod, Kostroma and Suzdal. These examples show the skill and gift of their builders to harmonize the building proper with the landscape. Wooden architecture predominates in Northern Russia and in some of the older settlements and towns of the Siberia, such as Tyumen.

There are 2 ways of addressing people: friendly and formal. You may address a person in a friendly way and call him by a first name only if you know the person very well. But if you are not familiar with the person or don't know him well enough use the formal way of addressing people.
Addressing a woman remember that "Miss" goes only with the name of a girl оr unmarried woman. "Mrs." is a form of address to married women only. "Ms" [miz] is used as a title of woman without distinction between married or unmarried. "Mr." is a form of address before a man's name. The polite form of addressing people is used to show respect to a person. In this case "sir" and "madam" are used.

The word computer comes from a Latin word which means to count. A computer is a machine with a complex network of electronic circuits that operate switches or magnetize tiny metal cores. The switches, like the cores, are capable of being in one of two possible states, that is, on and off; magnetized or demagnetized. The machine is capable of storing and manipulating numbers, letters, and characters. The basic idea of the computer is that we can make the machine do what we want by inputting signals that turn certain switches on and turn others off, or that magnetize or do not magnetize the cores.

                       What is law?
1. The English word "law" means various forms of behavior. Some laws are descriptive: they simply describe how people, or even natural phenomena, usually behave. An example is the law of gravity; another is laws of economics. Other laws are prescriptive − they prescribe how people ought to behave. For example, the speed limits are laws that prescribe how fast we should drive.
2. In all societies, relations between people are regulated by prescriptive laws. Some of them are customs - that is informal rules of social and moral behavior. Some are rules we accept if we belong to particular social and cultural groups. And some are laws made by nations and enforced against all citizens.
3. Customs need not be made by governments, and they need not be written down. We learn how we are to behave in society through the instruction of family and teachers, the advice of friends, etc. Sometimes, we can break these rules without any penalty. But if we continually break the rules, other members of society may criticize us, or refuse to have anything to do with us. The rules of social instructions are more formal than customs, carrying penalties for those who break them. Sports clubs, for example, often have detailed rules for their members. But if a member breaks a rule and refuses to accept any punishment, the club may ask him or her to leave the club.
4. However, when governments make laws for their citizens, they use a system of courts and the police to enforce these laws. Of course, there may be instances where the law is not enforced against someone - such as when young children commit crimes, or when certain people are able to escape justice by using their money or influence.

Britain has some excellent traditional food: lamb from Wales, shellfish and fresh salmon from Northern Ireland, fresh or smoked fish from England and Wales. Unfortunately, good British food is difficult to find. Only 2 per cent of restaurants in London serve British food. There are many more Italian, Chinese and Indian restaurants.
Restaurants serving “British” food tend to be either very expensive and found in luxury hotels, or cheap and nasty serving mainly fried food. You can eat a good “British” meal without spending a lot of money by going to a pub. Most pubs now serve good value hot and cold meals. They often have family areas where people under 16 can sit and eat.

Alcohol is the basis of wine, beer and spirits. Taken in moderation, with a meal, or in the company of friends, it can he regarded as one of the pleasure of life. But as with any drug, there are dangers as well as advantages associated with alcohol. Alcohol is rapidly absorbed from the stomach and intestine and soon appears in the blood. As the blood circulation through the lungs, alcohol diffuses into the air in the alveoli. The higher the concentration of alcohol in the blood, the higher the concentration in the breath.
This is the basis of the breathalyzer test used by the police in motorists suspected of driving while under the influence of drink. Alcohol can also be measured in the blood. It is metabolized (broken down) by the liver so that after 6 to 8 hours none can be detected in the blood or breath.

There are two distinct kinds of lawyer in Britain. One of these is a solicitor. Everybody who needs a lawyer has to go to one of these. They handle most legal matters for their clients, including the drawing up of documents (such as wills, divorce papers and contracts), communicating with other parties, and presenting their clients’ cases in magistrates’ courts. However, only since 1994 have solicitors been allowed to present cases in higher courts. If the trial is to be heard in one of these the solicitor normally hires the services of the other kind of lawyer – a barrister. The only function of barristers is to present cases in court.
The training of the two kinds of lawyer is very different. For example, all solicitors have to pass the Law Society exam. They study for this exam while “articled” to established firms of solicitors, where they do much of the everyday junior work until they are qualified.

In a gas atom like hydrogen, when the vibration increases the heat makes the atom expand more and lose its electron. The hydrogen atom becomes two separate charged particles: proton (+) and electron (−). Each of these particles is called plasma – a positive plasma and a negative plasma.
Plasma is not only produced by heat but also by particles bombarding the atoms. We can find plasma produced by heat in the sun, and plasma produced by particles bombarding the atoms in the ionosphere. We can also find artificial plasma during electric welding and inside fluorescent lamps.

A newborn baby has no immunity to whooping cough at all, and so he must be kept protected from children who have any kind of cough. Whooping cough seems like an ordinary cough for the first few days, but gradually the bouts become more and more prolonged and the child coughs continuously. His face becomes red and he very often vomits. At the end of the bout of cough, when he takes a deep breath, a croaky sound is heard which is called the whoop and which gives the disease its name. The disease is a prolonged one and the cough may last 2–3 months. It can lead to lung complications also.
The child loses weight because of repeated vomiting. Fortunately, it can be prevented by immunizing the child with triple antigen (DPT) injections.
A child with whooping cough should be kept separate from other children for the first 3–4 weeks. The disease is more severe in babies under 1 year of age, and every effort must be made to isolate them, at least.

Solid
1. Solid is one of the major states of matter. It is characterized by structural rigidity and resistance to changes of shape or volume. Unlike a liquid, a solid object does not flow to take on the shape of its container, nor does it expand to fill the entire volume available to it like a gas does. The atoms in a solid are tightly bound to each other, either in a regular geometric lattice or irregularly one.
2. The branch of physics that deals with solids is called solid-state physics, and is the main branch of condensed matter physics (which also includes liquids). Materials science is primarily concerned with the physical and chemical properties of solids. Solid-state chemistry is especially concerned with the synthesis of novel materials, as well as the science of identification and chemical composition.
3. The forces between the atoms in a solid can take a variety of forms. For example, a crystal of sodium chloride (common salt) is made up of ionic sodium and chlorine, which are held together by ionic bonds. In diamond or silicon, the atoms share electrons and form covalent bonds. In metals, electrons are shared in metallic bonding. Some solids, particularly most organic compounds, are held together with van der Waals forces resulting from the polarization of the electronic charge cloud on each molecule. The dissimilarities between the types of a solid result from the differences between their bonding.
Определите, какое утверждение соответствует содержанию текста.

It is possible to change a solid’s state modifying its chemical bonds.
The existence of various solids can be explained by different types of their lattices.
It has been an accepted fact that the quantity of atoms in a solid’s lattice is permanent.
A solid’s properties are quite different from those of a gas or a liquid due to its structure and the ability to resist.

For teenagers in the USA, working part-time to earn some pocket money is very common.
In California children of 12 and 13 can work but only as babysitters, paper boys/girls, gardeners, actors or singers and only for three hours a day. Older children, 16 and 17 years old, can work longer hours and can work in supermarkets, fast food restaurants and as pizza delivery boys/girls.
Most teenagers say they work for a little extra pocket money and parents usually agree that it is good experience for their children. They say that working part-time teaches young people about money and the real world.

In some form or another sport is an important part of the Englishmen’s daily life. Of all sports at least two have the greatest popularity among Britons: football in winter and golf in summer. One can also mention rugby, a form of English football in which the players use their hands for carrying the ball. The game is played by team of 15 men with an oval ball. Other sports such as tennis, cricket, boxing are also popular in England. Young people do athletics. But people who are fond of fishing or hunting continue with their sports even in middle age.
Probably the most popular sport in Britain is simply walking. People would go out into the country at the weekends, whole families, and spend their time walking especially in the more attractive scenery.
Britain has the reputation of a sporting nation that is why most of sport terms are English.

Rock and pop music are extremely popular, especially among young people. The Beatles, with their style of singing new and exciting, their wonderful sense of humor became the most successful pop group the world has ever known.
British groups often set new trends in music. New stars and styles continue to appear. One of the most popular contemporary musicians and composers is Andrew Lloyd Webber. The musicals and rock operas by A. L. Webber have been a great success both in Britain and overseas.
